We're Off To Receive An Award

We are pleased to share exciting news: ThinkProgress, produced by the team that also writes The Progress Report, has won the 2008 Sidney Hillman award for Best Blog. The announcement of the award appeared in the New York Times on May 13:

Sidney Hillman was one of the nation's great labor leaders, founding a predecessor union of UNITE. Since 1950, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has recognized journalists, writers, and public figures whose work promote social and economic justice. Each year, an independent panel of judges awards a prize in the categories of book, newspaper, magazine, broadcast media, photojournalism and blogs published or aired in the previous year.

This year's judges were Hendrik Hertzberg, senior editor of The New Yorker; Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation; Harold Meyerson, editor at large of the American Prospect; Susan Meiselas, independent photojournalist; and Rose Arce, senior editor at CNN.

Since its launch less than three years ago, ThinkProgress has developed a signature voice and an influential audience. Now ranked 26th most popular blog in the world with an audience of over one million unique visitors a month, ThinkProgress has already ascended to the ranks of the top three most popular political blogs. Some of ThinkProgress's most notable achievements in the past year include: documenting the lack of accountability over the Iraq war architects, revealing the conservative smear campaign against 12 year-old SCHIP recipient Graeme Frost, and analyzing the right-wing domination of talk radio and its negative effects.

The Guardian newspaper wrote, "With a staff of just [six], ThinkProgress punches well above its weight." Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) has said that ThinkProgress is "breathing new life into journalism."

There will be no regular Progress Report today or tomorrow, as we are in New York City to receive the award. We look forward to being back on Thursday, May 29. Thank you to all the readers who visit ThinkProgress and The Progress Report everyday for putting us on the map.
